Got your Level Check result? Here is what to do next

You have taken the free Level Check and have a result: Below A2, A2, B1, B2 or C1. What now? This guide gives a simple plan for each result, and explains what the result can and cannot tell you.

First, what your result means

The Level Check measures vocabulary, listening, grammar and reading. It does not test your Speaking or Writing, so treat it as a quick, honest estimate, not an official score. If your result says "borderline" (for example, B1/B2), both levels are possible, and a short check with a teacher gives a more reliable answer. The IELTS, CELPIP, TOEFL and PTE ranges shown with your result are general comparisons published by the exam providers. They are separate from your placement estimate and are only a guide. If you skipped Listening, you will see an "Incomplete" result with no level, because a full level needs all four parts. Take the test again with Listening to get a full result.

If your result is below A2 or A2

Focus: build a strong base before you think about exams.

  • Learn the 500 to 1,000 most useful everyday words, in short daily sessions.
  • Practise the main tenses (present, past, future) with simple sentences, speaking and writing.
  • Listen to slow, clear English every day, and repeat what you hear.

Our Natural English classes and the Comprehensive English Grammar Guide are good places to start.

If your result is B1

Focus: grammar accuracy and a wider vocabulary, to move towards B2.

  • Write a few sentences or a short paragraph every day, and check them for the mistakes you repeat most.
  • Learn linking words so your ideas connect (our linking words guide helps).
  • Work on one skill at a time. Our one-skill-at-a-time classes are built for this.

If your result is B2

Focus: exam technique, timing and writing structure.

  • B2 is a common point to start preparing for IELTS or CELPIP, if that is your goal. Start with timed practice on our IELTS or CELPIP practice pages.
  • If your goal needs a minimum in every skill, give the skill furthest below its target the most time.
  • Get feedback on your Writing and Speaking, which the Level Check does not test.

See our CELPIP classes and IELTS classes.

If your result is C1

Focus: precision and polish.

  • The Level Check stops at C1, so it cannot show how far above C1 you are.
  • Gains now come from exact vocabulary, advanced grammar and a high-scoring writing and speaking style.
  • Feedback on real writing and speaking helps most: see our assessment and feedback and 1:1 tutorials.

Whatever your result

  • Check your progress with something new. The Level Check shuffles the order of the answers, but the questions stay the same, so you may remember them if you retake it soon. A fresh timed practice task, or a short assessment with a teacher, shows progress more reliably.
  • Do not rely on one number. Combine it with practice tests and feedback from a teacher.
  • Ask us. If you want help choosing a plan, talk to us or message us on WhatsApp.
